Tough as nails Saturday

Tough as nails Satuday

Wow, grading was tough, not because I didn’t know my work, but it was very physical. We were about 70 students. The morning wasn’t cold at all and we were all in high spirits. My Partner confirmed and the stage was set for a good two and a half hour work out. What could be better right?

Shidoshi Nathan Lee opened the grading and Sensei Alex took the warm-ups. Once we got into 9th kyu I realised that we are in for a rough one. The Senseis were barking out the names of stances, blocks and before we knew it we were striking bags in 8th kyu. The pace was relentless and we had to perform to keep up. I kept up and so did my partner. We were getting into the groove and by the time 7th kyu rolled by the concrete floor didn’t feel so hard.

We were throwing each other onto the concrete floor like dirty rags and I could see the Senseis smile as the hall echoed with each break fall. We started with 6th kyu, most of the students were already outside and about 16 students were left. I still felt good and I knew what I was supposed to do. We cruised through 6th kyu and I only sprained my thumb slightly right at the end.

It was about 11 when we finished and I could feel fatigue setting in. I ate another energy bar and drank lots of water. There were Senseis dedicated to training the students that finished. We did a bit of sword work and there was a grappling session as well. I sat in on the last 3 Kyus just to see what awaits us.

Everyone got their grade and the Grading was an overall success with 3 new black belts added to the ranks. Congratulations to all those dedicated ninjas.

Embrace the shadows
