Rolling Thursday

We had a bye on Tuesday, the scouts were having a function and there were more of them than us so we quietly dispersed. Last night wasn’t quite business as usual. There have been some repercussions to the injury one of our fellow ninjas suffered last week.

We greeted and Sensei Garth ordered us to make two lines with the mats. Most of us knew what was coming. Everyone was told to fall backwards and break-fall left and right. I quite enjoyed the change in pace and the minutes rolled by as we rolled and break-fell to finish off.

We then got punching bags and the Senseis were coming up with strike combinations. I am still struggling with my cold so I took it a bit easier than usual and I just broke a bit of a sweat as we divided up into our groups.

We were doing 5th kuy again. My partner seemed a bit skittish since our incident with the key-ring and he just wanted to do knife. We went over the respective knife cuts again and then worked on some blocks and deflections. One student brought his real peace keeper knife with... it’s a scary double edge knife with the rough un-polished look of a back yard panga. I felt a chill crawl up my spine as I tried imagining an opponent with one of those in his hands... I could almost feel the hard cold steel in the pit of my belly.

Eventually we did a bit of key-ring work as well, but I feel I need a lot more work with it, Knife seems short in the syllabus with the key ring taking up the lion share. My friend gave me my key-ring at the end of the night. It felt good to hold the double pointed tube in my hand and I just had to try it out on one of the other students. It’s a powerful self defence weapon and especially effective for a woman. I think I will get Gugu one too and teach her how to takedown a mugger... after I taught her how to break fall of cause.

Embrace the shadows
