The stiffness was getting to me, I started training with the
kettle bell weights. It’s a funny looking weight with a ball of weight at the
bottom and a handle at the top. I use to do weights before, but decided to give
this new program a chance to see if I can apply the same low weight principle
with better results. Anyway it’s working. So I was secretly hoping for an easy
class but I knew that the opposite would be true.
I got to class and we were considerably less than the
previous lesson and as we completed the warm ups the command to make two lines
confirmed my prediction of a hard class. Soon my partner was attacking my mid
section and the two Senseis were taking pot shots in between. The assault on my
breathing apparatus continued for what seemed like forever, but I got my turn
and it felt good...
We carried on with some more combinations after that and soon
the mood for the class was set. It turned into a 7th kyu class and
the only way to make a cement floor soft is with an outstretched arm and open
hand slapping the ground hard to absorb the fall. There is no half slap or
gentle let down when the Sensei uses you as demonstration dummy and soon my hot
stinging palm felt numb and I knew it was on like Donkey Kong.
Break-falls, knee in the ribs and neck and pressure point
takedowns, I enjoyed the physicality and my mind was racing to think about ways
how I would prevent a real attacker from ever doing anything close to what I
was going through to me, so much so that at the end of the lesson I wanted to.
The adrenalin was coursing through my veins and I was ready to rumble, but no
such luck. Our sensei just smiled at me and told me to go and hit my punching
bag at home...
At least I had some consolation with the Kata Dante.
Embrace the Shadows.
